Brothers Melvin Goins (1933–2016) and Ray Goins (1936–2007) stand as foundational figures in the history of Bluegrass, originating from the coal mining region of Mercer County. Beginning their career in the early 1950s through regional radio and television broadcasts across West Virginia and Kentucky, they established their legacy through performances with The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, The Shenandoah Playboys, and their own group, The Goins Brothers Band.
Following Ray Goins's retirement from touring in 1994 due to health issues, Melvin Goins led the ensemble under the name Melvin Goins and Windy Mountain. The brothers' contributions to Traditional Bluegrass and Appalachian Folk are preserved in the International Bluegrass Music Museum's oral history archive, with Melvin Goins earning inductions into both the International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.
