Vietnamese group Saigon Soul Revival unveiled their new album, Chốn Ta Về ("The Place We Return To"), produced by Jan Hagenkötter and recorded analog at In The Box Studios in Saigon by engineer Benjamin James. Following international acclaim and the inclusion of their single "Ai Thật Lòng Yêu Ai" in the permanent exhibition of the Philharmonie de Paris, the band returns to explore national identity through global pop, soul, and rock.
Vocalist and songwriter Nguyễn Anh Minh shaped the record around the concept of finding one's way home through personal struggles. Musically building on their 2024 effort Mối Lương Duyên, the group expanded their arrangement palette with traditional Vietnamese instruments including the T'rung (bamboo xylophone), Sáo Trúc (bamboo flute), Đàn Tranh, Đàn Bầu, and Đàn Nguyệt, played by guitarist Indy Laville. The recording features guest appearances by multi-instrumentalist Đinh Nhật Minh and leading jazz saxophonist Trần Mạnh Tuấn, who contributed a solo to the R&B track "Ơ Kìa, Em Ơi".
The sonic spectrum spans dub adaptations of traditional melodies ("Lý Qua Dub"), regional elements from Cambodia, Thailand, and the Cham minority ("Khúc Tình Yên Vui"), alongside Latin styles like tango and cha-cha-cha ("Chachacha Ngây Thơ"). The visual artwork draws from Mid-century Vietnamese modernist design originating from the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine. Alongside the LP release, the band contributed to the "007 First Light" video game soundtrack, recorded music for a documentary on composer Y Vân, and is featured in the upcoming film "That Saigon Soul Sound" by Louis Corallo and Cake Collective.
