M. Frog is the self-titled debut solo album by French multi-instrumentalist and electronic music pioneer Jean-Yves Labat (performing under the pseudonym M. Frog), released in 1973 on Bearsville Records.Jean-Yves Labat de Rossi has one of the most eccentric backgrounds in music history. He was a former French Catholic monk who became fascinated by avant-garde synthesizers, leading him to move to the US. He is best known as a founding member and the synth player for Todd Rundgren’s progressive rock band, Utopia. His solo album is highly regarded for its ahead-of-its-time electronic sounds, resembling early Kraftwerk, and its unique presentation. The original vinyl included an elaborate booklet featuring a color-coded graphic notation system Labat invented to read and write synthesizer music instead of traditional notes.
