West Yorkshire solo guitarist Dean McPhee has released his sixth album, Northern Earth, serving as a direct evolution of the sonic concepts introduced in his 2024 set Astral Gold. In this release, the musician significantly expands his sound palette through extensive looping, unusual time signatures, a snare-drum pedal, and heavy sub-bass generated via an 18-inch subwoofer. The core of the album lies in a hypnotic, meditative guitar style bridging stoner doom, dub, solo guitar, and raga blues. The opening track Indica Fields echoes the mantric pacing of Om, while Appleby Fair recalls the modal approach of Sandy Bull. The focal point of the record, the 18-minute title track Northern Earth recorded live without overdubs, showcases a deep, sub-heavy instrumental storytelling. The material was developed through intimate live performances and ties into a rich network of independent labels including Blast First Petite, Hood Faire, Folklore Tapes, and Bass Ritual.
