Singer Sakîna Têyna, born into a Kurdish Alevi family in Turkey, navigated a path from underground Kurdish folk music performances and political activism to a full-time musical career in Austria, where she settled as a political refugee in 2006. Throughout her years in exile, the artist founded the all-female ensemble TRIO MARA, which blends traditional Kurdish songs with Western classical music, joined the ANADOLU QUARTETT, and established the cross-cultural group Sakina & Friends.
The album Sûret is dedicated to the tragic history of Kurdistan and the memory of individuals whose lives were prematurely cut short by oppression and conflict. Named after the concept of faces frozen in time on family photographs, the release utilizes world music, Kurdish folklore, and chamber classical music to transform fading memories and silent grief into enduring melodies, serving as a testament to cultural resistance and remembrance.
