American composer and music theorist Robert Morris spans a broad creative spectrum in his work, ranging from rigorous avant-garde Pitch-Class Design and conceptual Electronic Music to outdoor natural environment pieces and intercultural compositions. A key example of his approach to musical acculturation is his fifth string quartet, "Carnatic String Quartet," composed in 2020. The piece is built upon the South Indian classical Carnatic Music tradition, specifically using the system of 72 fundamental "melakarta" scales codified in the 17th century. Robert Morris structures the three-movement work into 72 distinct sections, ordering the Indian scale sequences by maximizing common tones between them, while incorporating complex Indian-inspired rhythmic permutations alongside free parlando declamation and senza misura passages.
