Formed in Greenwood, Mississippi, by 17-year-old singer and songwriter Sid Herring, the American band The Gants became a notable act in the 1960s garage rock scene. The group first gained national attention with their cover of Bo Diddley's rhythm and blues standard Road Runner, which reached number 46 on the US charts.
Despite the leader's songwriting talent, the ensemble's reputation suffered following the release of their second album, Gants Galore. Commissioned by their record label as a collection of covers, the record lacked energy and failed to capture the band's true identity. However, Sid Herring's original compositions exhibited melodic craftsmanship heavily influenced by The Beatles—a prime example being I Wonder, which was later featured on the canonical garage rock and proto-punk compilation Nuggets. This expanded collection selects key original tracks by Herring from three albums and singles, highlighting the legacy of a gifted yet overlooked teenage rock band.
