The musical ensemble Spell Songs, bringing together seven prominent folk artists — Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Kris Drever, Seckou Keita, Rachel Newton, Jim Molyneux, and Beth Porter — has created their third studio album, In Thin Air, released via Hudson Records. The project serves as an official musical companion piece to Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris's book The Book of Birds, addressing nature conservation and the urgent loss of avian species across global ecosystems.
The songwriting process took place within the contemplative surroundings of the Ty Sanctaidd roundhouse in South West Wales, with final recordings engineered by producer Andy Bell at Scotland's Castle Sound Studio. Structurally, the folk compositions reflect a central seven-part narrative arc based on the life cycle of birds (nest, egg, beak, song, feather, flight, migration). Merging traditional British folk arrangements with acoustic world music textures, the album delivers a poetic, fierce environmental manifesto.
