Italian-American folk ensemble Alla Boara, led by percussionist, composer, and arranger Anthony Taddeo, presents their third studio album Tessere, released via Adhyâropa Records. The conceptual foundation of the record rests on historical field recordings of regional Italian folk music captured by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax in 1954. The ensemble features vocalist Amanda Powell, guitarist Dan Bruce, pianist/accordionist Mark Micchelli, trumpeter Tommy Lehman, and bassist Ian Kinnaman.
The project reimagines archaic ceremonial, work, and traditional songs from various Italian regions, originally sung in distinct regional dialects. The band integrates authentic vocal and rhythmic sources into modern jazz, progressive rock, and global acoustic frameworks. The tracklist spans a diverse range of forms, moving from the energetic tarantella "Che Bera Sta Figghiola" and the spring ritual song "Maggio Delle Ragazze" (featuring guest violinist Yaryna Tsarynska) to the 9-minute epic centerpiece "Questa Mattina," which incorporates sampled stone-breaking hammers from Puglian street workers into a dense rock crescendo inspired by Radiohead.
