The Bahnar people of the Central Highlands in Vietnam's Kon Tum province possess a unique and ancient musical heritage passed down through generations. Their traditional culture encompasses a wide variety of performance styles and rare instruments, including gong ensembles, bamboo zithers, xylophones, folk songs, and an authentic bamboo fiddle with a mouth resonator that produces a specific hypnotic sound reminiscent of Peter Frampton's analog talkbox effect.
Between 2006 and 2015, researcher Eisuke Yanagisawa conducted a series of field recordings across the villages of Kon Tum province, capturing the region's vanishing soundscape. Due to rapid cultural assimilation, shifts in traditional lifestyles, and environmental changes, the musical art of the Bahnar is facing the threat of extinction, making these field recordings an essential historical document preserving Vietnam's fleeting heritage.
