Deep within the Pakistani provinces of Sindh and Punjab lies a tradition of Sufi spiritual music that serves as an intuitive, emotional, and uncompromising form of devotion. Arshia Fatima Haq, founder of the art collective Discostan, documented these rare field recordings for the Sublime Frequencies label, creating a document of musical resistance against religious orthodoxy and Wahhabism.
This sonic archive bridges hypnotic instrumental solos on traditional instruments (harmonium, alghoza, been, bulbul tarang), piercing a cappella vocal performances, and euphoric ensemble qawwali. The recordings feature a mix of recognized television masters alongside itinerant wandering singers (ishq ke maare), offering their prayers in crumbling concert halls, private living rooms, and ancient shrines. Amid strict political pressure and the threat of violence against street performers, artists such as Ustad Aacher and Company, Kalyam Sharif Qawwali Troupe, Meeh Wasaiyo, Fatah Daudpoto, Latif Sarkar, Basheer Haidari and Nazira Bano, Shazia Tarannum, Babu, Sain Juman Shah and Fakirs, and Ghulam Arshad preserve an anarchic, iconoclastic culture that dissolves the divide between the sacred and the profane.
