In the late 1950s, the rapid development of stereo technology and the growing popularity of the 12-inch LP record format prompted American labels to explore new styles of instrumental easy listening music. In 1959, 21-year-old Texas radio DJ Tommy "Snuff" Garrett joined Los Angeles-based Liberty Records, quickly rising from producing young acts to becoming the head of A&R.
Joining forces with arranger Ernie Freeman, Tommy "Snuff" Garrett devised a highly successful studio concept known as The 50 Guitars Of Tommy Garrett, alongside its secondary spin-off The 25 Pianos Of Tommy Garrett. To bring the project to life, he recruited premier West Coast session guitarists, including Laurindo Almeida, Al Caiola, and Barney Kessel. The series of concept albums, blending elements of easy listening, country, pop, and latin, continued throughout the 1960s and 1970s, setting a benchmark for studio production and clever music marketing. Key early releases—such as "50 Guitars Go South of The Border Vols. 1 & 2", "50 Guitars Visit Hawaii", "50 Guitars Go Country", and "25 Pianos Play Evergreens Of Broadway"—captured an atmospheric instrumental sound that became a staple of classic American lounge and orchestral entertainment.
