Formed in 1980 in Limburg, Germany, the multinational band The Wirtschaftswunder brought together musicians from diverse backgrounds: Czech-born guitarist Tom Dokoupil (Tom Dokoupil), Canadian keyboardist Mark Pfurtscheller (Mark Pfurtscheller), German drummer Jürgen Beuth (Jürgen Beuth) of Die Radierer, and Sicilian vocalist Angelo Galizia (Angelo Galizia). The ensemble established a distinct position within European post-punk and krautrock, delivering an avant-garde take on danceable yet unsettling pop infused with industrial textures. Their live performances functioned as theatrical art actions featuring angle grinders, cutting metal, whistles, and calculated stage disruption, with conceptual input provided by "New Wild" painter Jiri Georg Dokoupil (Jiri Georg Dokoupil). The vocal delivery reflected a genuine sense of displacement from a Sicilian migrant worker adjusting to West Germany's industrial landscape. Recorded by Dokoupil in a modest 4-track basement studio, the group's debut LP stands as a key milestone of the Neue Deutsche Welle movement.
