The conceptual album and theatrical project "The Transit Rider" by the American band Faun Fables originated in the early 1990s, inspired by lead vocalist Dawn McCarthy's (Dawn McCarthy) experiences riding the New York City subway. The concept of a subterranean journey through an endless transit network of rails and human encounters evolved into a full-scale 2001 stage production in San Francisco featuring a 13-member cast and director Allen Willner (Allen Willner). The musical material was subsequently expanded and recorded alongside Nils Frykdahl (Nils Frykdahl) of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, as well as multi-instrumentalists Jenya Chernoff (Jenya Chernoff) and Matt Lebofsky (Matt Lebofsky). Sonically, the release blends avant-garde folk, electroacoustic textures, Kurt Weill-inspired theatrical cabaret, and folk rock. The record features personal family contributions from McCarthy's parents, alongside interpretations of compositions by Zygmunt Konieczny (Zygmunt Konieczny), The Singing Nun (Soeur Sourire), and traditional Anglo-Saxon folk.
