A collaborative project between the Chicago instrumental trio Black Duck (featuring Douglas McCombs of Tortoise and Brokeback, Bill MacKay, and Charles Rumback) and Basque musician Elena Setién (Elena Setién), known for her work with Steve Gunn and Mary Lattimore, originated during their joint tour across Spain in early 2025. Their live stage improvisations and natural chemistry translated into a self-titled record captured at Chicago's Palisade studio with sound engineer Nick Broste. The album's sonic landscape balances free improvisation, indie rock, jazz, post-rock, and detailed layered arrangements, weaving together Setién's songcraft, McCombs's countermelody basslines, MacKay's rhythmic guitar work, and Rumback's playful waltz time signatures.
