Sonique - Hear My Cry (2000)

British techno/R&B singer Sonique's debut album won't make you cry, but it might put a smile on your face with its positive vibe, even if it has a few hiccups. The positive lyrics and high-pitched vocals make for a very pleasant listening experience. Songs about feeling good, heartbreaking songs, and wanting to see the world in a better place - Sonique does her best to make a positive difference in the world with her songs. The lyrics may seem a bit too bold at times, but they are still very relatable and relevant in this current world, and I think that's a positive. She has a great talent for everything from powerful vocals to soulful chill vocals. This album gives us a chance to showcase these different styles well. The only thing that makes things fall flat are some of the instrumental choices. Some of the songs sound flat or poorly produced, which ruins the mood of the song. Some of the songs sound very timeless, while others suffer from being stuck in the 90s. Interesting choices, to be sure, but too kitschy is bad for being serious. During the Euro trance craze of the late 90s, I think this is a great way to close out that era.
