This project taps into a 30-year archive of my original songs. The songs span from the early 90's with my earliest bluegrass band in NJ, then years of woodshedding and living on dreams in Western North Carolina, learning fiddle tunes on mandolin from local old time musicians, and on to more recent musical and lyrical evolutions from working as a mastering engineer in NYC and getting in on the ground floor of the blossoming bluegrass and folk scene of the The Jalopy Theater in Brooklyn.
Most of these songs were road-tested, notably during my decade in the mid-aughts performing and recording with Brooklyn’s M Shanghai String Band. All of them bring me joy to perform and share with others, whether on stage or at a jam with friends.
Gratuitous Grace reunites me with M Shanghai bandmates Gerald Menke, Hilary Hawke, and Philippa Thompson, whose dobro, banjo, fiddle, and vocals recapture our live magic. I am so grateful for their contributions. The album is further elevated by Sheila Shukla’s harmony vocals and Gary Oleyar’s incomparable fiddle work.
Much appreciation and thanks goes to my old friend Nathan James at Vault Mastering for allowing me to unconditionally trust him with my music.
Finally, I am so grateful for my wife's support, and for my children, who gave me some quiet time to record over the last two years.
