The second solo album by British-Guyanese multi-instrumentalist Eddy Grant, "Message Man," recorded at London's The Coach House Studio and released in 1977 via Ice Records, stands as a landmark in the development of proto-soca and Caribbean popular music. Performed and sung almost entirely by Eddy Grant himself with session support from the group 90° Inclusive, the record addresses pressing socio-political themes. Through tracks like "Race Hate," "Get Down Soweto," and "Cockney Black," the artist explores racial discrimination, Black British identity, and the struggle against apartheid. The centerpiece of the album is the nearly 12-minute track "Hello Africa," which blends African polyrhythms, funk, and reggae. The overarching concept of the release was influenced by Zambian artist and sculptor Akwila Simpasa, who inspired Eddy Grant to adopt the persona of a musical messenger delivering social commentary through a fusion of soca, funk, reggae, and pop.
