Every so often a record turns up on the doormat, and I have to hold my hand up: I knew neither the artist nor the label when the vinyl landed.
Waterfall Records is a small Berlin independent that has spent years as a retro soul imprint, a roster that has stayed almost entirely off the British radar. Ghosts from the Past is the label’s first album to step outside that remit, belonging instead to a German and wider European strain of contemporary R&B that has grown quietly over the past decade or so: studio-literate, immaculately finished, and aimed at ears raised on the streaming-era shape of the genre rather than the raw American records a lot of us here grew up on. I flag that at the top because it frames how I’ve heard the whole thing.
SARIFE — born Sarife Afonso, Hamburg-based, of Spanish and German parentage — arrived at the music by the scenic route. She trained in musical theatre between 2012 and 2015 and, by the label’s account, reached the Musical final of the World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles in 2019. The pandemic pause turned her toward the music she says she’d always meant to make: her first single ‘Careful’ appeared in 2020, self-released and entirely DIY, followed by the EP Relations and a run of further singles. In 2023 she joined the Hamburg collective Angels of Libra, first on backing vocals and then out front as lead singer, and began piecing this debut together in parallel — part home studio, part Dennis Rux’s Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Studios, and by all accounts on a shoestring.
Spread across two sides of vinyl, Ghosts from the Past takes grief, desire and self-repair as its raw material, and it’s produced with obvious care, principally by Rux and Laura Hofer. My reservation is the finish. Everything here is buffed to a high sheen, and for my taste that sheen sands away the grain I look for — not a sax-bar gloss, but a tidiness so complete it leaves little for the ear to catch on. SARIFE sings throughout in English, and there’s an angularity to the phrasing that sits slightly outside idiomatic delivery; whether you read that as character or as roughness will decide a good deal of your response to the record.
Side A moves politely. The title track ‘Ghosts’ opens with a clear statement of intent, mid-tempo and neatly turned, and ‘Etéreo’ folds in a spoken Spanish monologue from Julie Silvera. The one that holds me is ‘Come Closer’, where a guest verse from Joél Davíd — rapped in English — gives the track a pulse the songs around it don’t quite find. ‘Space’ pushes toward the floor, a club-leaning aside that at least shifts the palette and shows the record isn’t afraid of a beat.
Side B is where it settles, into a sequence of warmer R&B that suits SARIFE better — ‘Drifting Away’ and ‘Green Papaya’ among them. ‘Heal’ would sit comfortably in that company were it not for the saxophone feature — pure Smooth Jazz, crowding a vocal that wanted room to breathe.
The two cuts that genuinely catch me arrive late. ‘Love.’ is spoken rather than sung, and stripped of melody, SARIFE sounds present and unguarded — the one moment the album stops performing and speaks. And the closer ‘Una Última Vez’, a Latin-leaning collaboration with Angels of Libra carrying a lyric partly in Spanish, is the most persuasive full-band moment on the record, and a hint of the looser, warmer thing this music could become.
Taken as easy-listening R&B, Ghosts from the Past is a sincere, capable debut: personal in its concerns, and polished to a fault. It isn’t the grittier, deeper end this site tends to fly the flag for, and the polish that will win it friends elsewhere is the very thing that keeps me at a slight distance. But there’s a voice here worth keeping an ear on, and in ‘Love.’ and ‘Una Última Vez’ a glimpse of where it might head once the studio shine loosens its hold.
