British musician, visual artist, and community organizer Jake Blanchard, known for designing artwork for Richard Dawson and curating the experimental music scene in Todmorden, releases his solo album Fermentation via Cardinal Fuzz and Eiderdown Records.
The center of the record is the electric shahi baaja—a rare electro-acoustic zither with typewriter-style keys. Blending Indian ragas, psychedelic rock, hypnotic drone, and heavy effects processing, Blanchard bridges Eastern traditions with Western avant-garde soundscapes reminiscent of Michael Flower and Sandy Bull.
The album was created while dealing with severe hip issues and chronic pain. Unable to perform for extended stretches, the artist abandoned long continuous jams in favor of constructing intricate tracks from brief recording bursts.
