In 1971, at the Sound Work-Shop studio in Rome under the production direction of Piero Umiliani, the studio project The Braen’s Machine, led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Alessandro Alessandroni, created the album Underground. Recorded in just two days for Liuto Records as production library music, the release ultimately transcended its functional purpose.
The soundscape fuses the freedom of British psychedelic rock reminiscent of early Pink Floyd with heavy funk grooves, virtuosic jazz improvisation, and the cinematic drama of Italian composition. Through the heavy use of fuzz-distorted electric guitars, layered Hammond organs, studio space effects, and an insistent rhythm section, the musicians forged an autonomous, evocative, and dense sonic environment. Originally prized only by niche vinyl collectors, the album over the decades proved to be a self-contained and pioneering work, showcasing a balance between abstract studio experimentation and refined musical structure.
