Justin Copeland has performed alongside Branford Marsalis and Dee Dee Bridgewater, and in 2020 was one of thirty musicians worldwide selected to audition for the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. None of that prepares you for how relaxed he sounds on Joyful Foundation. Entre Amigos’ third release is an intimate, unhurried post bop record, and Copeland fits right in — a reminder that the music is most alive when everyone in the room is genuinely having fun.
Joyful Foundation splits its eight tracks evenly between Copeland originals and new works from the band. The opener “Ride” establishes the tone early: a polyrhythmic Brazilian groove with counterpoint between the horns, everyone locked into their own repeating phrase until the whole thing locks into an easy, rolling groove. Copeland’s trumpet floats on top with a laidback clarity and a tone that’s unfailingly bright.
Even when the tempo lifts, as on Hana Fujisaki’s up-tempo swinger “Probability,” the band swings with ease rather than effort — she hits those left-hand chords with authority while her right hand finds its own melodic logic. Roy McGrath’s “Fue Nuestro” is the album’s slowest and most cinematic moment, the horns smearing their lines languidly, the bass soloing with a storyteller’s patience, carrying a late-night film noir weight. “Joyful Foundation” itself is a laidback post bop shuffle where Copeland caresses his upper-register lines with a sweetness that earns the title outright.
Kitt Lyles and Gustavo Cortiñas anchor everything without ever getting in the way — Lyles shifting between insistent, driving bass lines and more melodic, resonant playing as the music demands, Cortiñas equally comfortable with light cymbal work or a harder, more aggressive shuffle when the tempo calls for it. Cortiñas closes the album with his own “Valley of 1000 Devils,” giving the band a freer structure to work in — the horns starting quietly, phrases growing more insistent as the energy builds, until the whole thing cuts off sharply.
Entre Amigos has made a quiet habit of this — their previous release, Magpie, featured the music of Chicago trumpeter Joe Clark, and Joyful Foundation continues that practice of sharing the stage with peers from their own scene. That Copeland fits so naturally into the quartet’s sound is itself the point. Three records in, they’re building something worthwhile: a catalog that includes some of the best of Chicago’s jazz community.
