Publishing house Wolke Verlag has released "Radio Cologne Sound: Studio für Elektronische Musik des WDR," a historic musicological research project compiled by Harry Vogt and Martina Seeber. The work is dedicated to the history of the WDR Studio for Electronic Music in Cologne, established in 1951 by physicist Werner Meyer-Eppler, engineer Fritz Enkel, and composers Robert Beyer and Herbert Eimert. In post-war Europe, the studio emerged as a primary global hub for the avant-garde, introducing radical new methodologies for sonic abstraction, magnetic tape manipulation, and early analog synthesis. The facility served as a creative workshop for definitive 20th-century composers, including Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis, Henri Pousseur, Franco Evangelisti, and Luc Ferrari. The 288-page book features archival essays, structural analyses of the interplay between technology and electroacoustic aesthetics, alongside a 5CD anthology containing 28 landmark compositions generated at the Cologne studio, ranging from early musique concrète to complex 1970s-electronic studio works.
