Konono Nº1 - Congotronics (2004)

BAND/ARTIST: Konono Nº1

Congolese musical collective Konono No.1, founded by likembé virtuoso Mingiedi, created a unique sound bridging African traditions and industrial experimentation. Rooted in the hypnotic trance music of the Bazombo people, their work relies on three electric likembés amplified through DIY pickups crafted from scrap car parts and broadcast via colonial-era megaphones. Coupled with a rhythm section built from pans, pots, and automotive metal, the system's unintended amplification distortion transformed traditional folklore into raw ethno-electro-avant-garde, earning comparisons to krautrock, proto-techno, and psychedelic rock. The group achieved worldwide acclaim, winning a BBC Award for World Music and gaining high-profile support from alternative icons like Björk, who featured them on her album and invited them to perform live.
