In late 1988 in Warsaw, on the eve of the historic Round Table Talks, a unique musical union took place between Polish vocalist and pianist Stanisław Soyka and European avant-garde jazz legend, trumpeter Tomasz Stańko. At the peak of his creative energy, the 29-year-old Stanisław Soyka, who had already secured an international contract with RCA, joined forces at Polish Radio's Studio S-4 with the 46-year-old Tomasz Stańko for two one-day sessions of pure avant-garde improvisation. This spontaneous interaction yielded two expansive instrumental suites—"Medula oblangada" (recorded in August) and "All Souls' Day Suite" (recorded in November)—which remained archived and forgotten for nearly forty years.
The recordings showcase Stanisław Soyka not in his familiar role as a vocalist, but as an expressive pianist whose trance-like, rhythmic playing is heavily infused with soul and gospel influences. The trumpet of Tomasz Stańko introduces pure jazz abstraction, creating a compelling tension between grounded emotional harmonies and free-form exploration. These entirely instrumental sessions birthed foundational harmonic ideas that later surfaced on Stanisław Soyka's landmark 1991 album Acoustic. Visual design by Izabela Jurczyk and Robert Bobryk, featuring archival photography by Andrzej Tyszko, underscores the historic and artistic magnitude of this encounter between two icons of Polish jazz.
