For more than three decades, Pete and Maura Kennedy have made music together while rarely staying in one place for very long. On their new album, Smoketree, the Kennedys turn that lifetime of travel and observation into a collection of original songs filled with hope, compassion, and their unmistakable folk-rock spirit.
Their story began in 1992 at The Continental Club in Austin, Texas, where Pete and Maura first met. Within days they were singing together and had written their first song, while their first date was appropriately unconventional: a road trip to Buddy Holly’s grave in west Texas. Pete was playing in Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra at the time, and when an opening appeared in the band, Maura joined as well. Before long, the Kennedys were also opening Griffith’s shows, beginning a musical partnership that has kept them on the road ever since.
Starting with their debut album in 1995, the Kennedys became familiar names on Triple A, Americana, and folk radio, ultimately recording two dozen collections of mostly original material along with numerous solo and side projects. For years, they logged roughly 50,000 miles annually on tour and even spent four years behind the microphones as hosts of The Dharma Café on SiriusXM. When the pandemic brought touring to a halt, they simply moved the show online, performing more than 150 livestreams and sharing over 1,000 songs with listeners around the world.
Smoketree follows 2023’s Headwinds, which spent a month at No. 1 on the national Folk DJ chart. This time, Pete and Maura offer an entirely new set of original songs inspired by a world that continues to give them plenty to write about. Environmental concerns, social upheaval, people displaced by violence, and the ongoing search for peace all find their way into the album.
Even when the subject matter gets heavy, the Kennedys remain focused on possibility. Their songs acknowledge the troubles around us while looking for the humanity, connection, and encouragement that can carry people through them. That sense of optimism has long been central to their music, and Smoketree keeps the light burning.
More than 30 years after that chance meeting in Austin, Pete and Maura Kennedy are still doing what came naturally almost from the moment they met: writing songs, singing together, and heading down the road. Smoketree is another chapter in a journey that shows no signs of reaching its final stop.
