Following the critically acclaimed 'Hvem Vil Ikke Elskes Igen' (Who Doesn't Want to Be Loved Again), Signe Svendsen is ready to present her sixth studio album, 'Alt det vi gør for ikke at dø' (Everything We Do to Avoid Dying) – a work that addresses our coexistence in a world in turmoil.
Signe Svendsen has made her mark as one of the most compelling voices and songwriters on the Danish-language scene. She is her generation's foremost musical spokesperson, with a courage and a woman's heart that is not afraid to lay bare the difficult things. Her songs combine the poetic and the down-to-earth – always in a space of reflection, subtlety and warmth.
The new album 'Alt det vi gør for ikke at dø' (Everything we do to avoid dying) begins where others end: with farewell. A story about how farewell becomes part of life when you are halfway through it. Farewell to people, places, periods, sides of yourself. As in nature, where trees shed their leaves, it is not about the end, but about transformation. The album revolves around precisely that: the attempt to embrace being human in a time that frightens, moves and changes. A theme that continues in the second single, Applaus, where Signe, in a duet with Hymns from Nineveh, sings a lullaby for the world.
It is, of course, intentional that I start the album with songs that would normally end a work. They resonate with a collective feeling that is in tune with the times. A turning point, a change in the world that we must go through together. All my new songs are, in their own way, about our relationships and their fragility – because I believe that it is loving togetherness that will lift us forward in a changed world, says Signe.
The songs on the album zoom in on some of the feelings that grow in our communities and get up close and personal with the ups and downs of relationships throughout life. We encounter harsh realities of abuse and partner killings, we go through a break-up with a childhood friend, we struggle with a narrow concept of normality, and we receive a realisation from mother to daughter that it has taken a little too long to pick up the gauntlet in the fight for women's rights.
