Maťkovia - 1982-1986 (Expanded) (2026)

BAND/ARTIST: Maťkovia

The Slovak music project Maťkovia, founded in Bratislava by composer Martin Burlas, is recognized as one of the pioneers of indie rock and post-punk in Czechoslovakia. Operating primarily as a studio-based underground project between 1982 and 1987, the band was barred from official releases by state censorship due to its nihilistic lyrics and dark humor criticizing the greyness of the normalization era. Consequently, their audio recordings circulated exclusively via DIY cassette tapes.

Steering clear of the officially sanctioned art rock and prog rock acts of the region (such as Fermáta and Collegium Musicum), Maťkovia embraced a raw new wave sound influenced by The Police, Talking Heads, Gang of Four, and Ministry. After briefly obtaining live performance permits in the late 1980s, Martin Burlas disbanded the group immediately following their debut tour when bandmates suggested compromising their lyricism to appease authorities. Their rare compilation 1982–1986, originally issued in a limited run by Zoon Records in 1991, has been restored for an expanded release by the 42far imprint.
