In 1988, Jean Michel Jarre released his ninth album, Revolutions, which combined symphonic, industrial, folk, electro-jazz and guitar pop elements with Middle Eastern influences.
Jarre planned to release the album in September at Destinations Docklands, an east London dock. He deliberately chose the unpopulated area, but close to central London; he needed a suitable venue to present his album, which commemorated the industrial and youth revolution of the sixties.
The local authorities delayed issuing permits, fearing the huge crowds, and citing security reasons, agreed to the event only if Jarre performed on two consecutive October days.
The stage was built on four barges, fastened together, and in addition to the fireworks and laser show, WWII anti-aircraft searchlights scanning the sky contributed to the grandiose spectacle.
Jarre was joined on stage by former Shadows guitarist Hank Marvin. On the first day, the estimated 200,000 audience barely escaped the storm, but the next day they were not so lucky; they were soaked to the skin. BBC Radio 1 broadcast the concert live.
