Italian-Swiss composer, vocalist, and pianist Francesca Gaza, alongside her Kugelförmigkeit Ensemble, has released the album Crown Shyness via New Amsterdam Records. Founded in 2021, the ensemble functions as an experimental laboratory that unites performers on period baroque, jazz, and contemporary classical instruments.
The project's concept draws inspiration from the natural phenomenon of "crown shyness," in which trees grow side-by-side without their canopies touching. The album's sonic architecture balances historical performance practice with avant-garde chamber music, weaving vocals, theorbo, viola da gamba, and baroque flute together with electric guitar, virginal, bass clarinet, and a jazz rhythm section.
