The soundtrack to the third season of Apple TV's nature documentary series "Prehistoric Planet," subtitled "Ice Age," continues the scoring partnership between Hans Zimmer, Anže Rozman and Kara Talve for the composer collective Bleeding Fingers Music, the same trio behind the show's two prior, dinosaur-focused seasons. This installment, executive produced by Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton and narrated by Tom Hiddleston, shifts the show's timeline forward to the Pleistocene — the era of Ice Age megafauna such as mammoths, saber-toothed cats, giant ground sloths and marsupial lions.
According to Rozman, the composing team deliberately moved away from the more alien sound world of the dinosaur seasons toward something more familiar yet still unsettled, aiming for a score that felt "slightly off, but much more emotional" — partly a reflection of early humans now sharing the landscape with these animals.
The production continued the franchise's signature approach of building custom instruments from fossils and skull replicas alongside a traditional orchestra. To convey the scale of mammoths, the composers used a semicircular "wall" of cellos and double basses together with a recorded octobass, a rare giant double bass, for low-end rumble. For the terror bird (phorusrhacid), the team built an instrument nicknamed the Terror Tone — a bagpipe-like wind instrument adorned with replicas of the bird's spine, skull and foot — continuing the lineage of season-one's Triceratone. The score also draws on a replica of the Divje Babe flute, a Paleolithic instrument believed to have been carved from a cave bear femur.
Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers co-founder Russell Emanuel produced the score; Forest Christenson handled mixing.
