Music Box Records has issued the premiere CD release of the original film score composed by Georges Delerue for the 1991 period romance American Friends. Directed by Tristram Powell and written by Michael Palin (who also stars), the film is based on the real-life journals of Palin's great-grandfather. The narrative follows Reverend Francis Ashby, a reclusive Oxford scholar whose quiet existence and academic ambitions are upended after a transformative journey through the Swiss Alps and a subsequent entanglement with two visiting American women.
Restored from original studio DAT tapes, Delerue's 40-minute symphonic soundtrack captures the warmth, lyrical charm, and expressive depth characteristic of the composer's late-career output.
