"CONSTELLATION" (1983) is a solo electronic album by German jazz musician, composer, and saxophonist Klaus Doldinger, best known as the frontman of the jazz-rock band Passport and the composer of the iconic soundtracks to the films "Das Boot" and "The NeverEnding Story."
"CONSTELLATION" occupies a unique place in Doldinger's extensive discography. On this release, the musician almost completely departs from his usual jazz-rock and fusion saxophone, immersing himself in pure synthesizer experimentation.
The release is inspired by the German electronic scene of the early 1980s and the Berlin school. Its sound bears direct references to the works of Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Vangelis. The music is built on pulsating analog sequences, spacious synth pads, and cosmic electronic textures.
The album is logically divided into two parts. Side two of the vinyl is entirely dedicated to the five-part title suite "Constellation (Parts 1–5)"—a monumental, meditative, and hypnotic cosmic journey. Side one contains more dynamic synth compositions ("Skyscape," "Timesignature").
Futuristic, cosmic, spatial, and slightly cinematic, this album ties in with Doldinger's best screen work from the 1980s.
