In 1966, the ensemble Sons of Hawaii, led by musician Eddie Kamae, released a landmark album that sparked the movement known as the "Second Hawaiian Renaissance." As part of the project, the band collaborated with linguists and cultural elders to research and record forgotten 19th-century Hawaiian folk compositions, including works authored by Queen Liliʻuokalani.
In contrast to the commercialized, tourist-oriented entertainment of the mid-century era, the musicians returned to the authentic Nahenahe tradition—a gentle, harmonious acoustic soundscape built upon interwoven slack-key guitars, ukuleles in alternative tunings, and acoustic bass. The album reinterprets Hawaii's cultural heritage by preserving the poetic metaphors and natural symbolism of the original lyrics, standing as a pivotal instrument of cultural self-determination and identity preservation within Traditional Hawaiian, Folk, and Acoustic Roots genres.
