Brazilian-American saxophonist, composer, and arranger Gaia Wilmer collaborated with vocalist Mônica Salmaso and a premier New York jazz large ensemble to record Parabólico, an expansive tribute to the music of Gilberto Gil. The album continues her series of reimagined masterworks dedicated to iconic Latin American composers (following projects honoring Egberto Gismonti and Caetano Veloso). Wilmer’s arrangements expand standard big band architecture by incorporating dual flutes—drawing lineage from Pixinguinha’s choro, Hermeto Pascoal’s "universal music," and Gil Evans’ orchestral textures—alongside a rhythm section rooted in Brazilian traditions. Featuring prominent figures from Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra—including Vinicius Gomes, Vitor Gonçalves, Jorge Roeder, Richie Barshay, David Smith, and Chris Washburne—the project seamlessly bridges Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), Northeastern Brazilian rhythms, and modern large ensemble jazz. Issued ahead of a scheduled second volume on Sunnyside in 2027 and a September 2026 release showcase at Dizzy’s Club, the work captures the poetic and political breadth of Gil’s catalog.
