In the mid-1970s, American musician Mikel Rouse formed the Kansas City band Tirez Tirez, blending new wave, minimalism, and experimental pop. The group gained prominent recognition touring as the opening act for Talking Heads in 1978, with frontman David Byrne continuing to support Rouse during his transition to New York's avant-garde scene alongside figures like Arthur Russell.
Released on the Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule in 1982/83, the album Story of the Year captures this pivotal transition. The record combines early Tirez Tirez sessions with later recordings made in New York and Brussels. Bridging post-punk and contemporary composition, the work demonstrates Rouse's early experiments with layered rhythms, phase-based repetition, and system-based composition within a band format—techniques that would later become central to the development of totalism.
