Johanna Hermann, married name Otto Müller, came from a family with a deep appreciation for the arts. Her parents encouraged her, and after her marriage—which relieved her of the need to earn her own living—she was able to develop her natural talent for composition alongside teachers such as Alexander Zemlinsky and Franz Schmidt, acquiring a comprehensive technical foundation. The results were so remarkable that renowned luminaries such as Wilhelm Furtwängler championed her work. Her symphonic ambitions are already evident in the String Quintet, Op. 7, from 1908 / 09, whose expansive dimensions and dense motivic work are on par with the musical trends of the time—a successful attempt at self-assertion that had long since been realized in the Cello Sonata, Op. 17, composed a decade and a half later and significantly more compact: Impressionistic sparkle, powerful lines, carefree dreamscapes, and pastoral serenity come together in the composer’s final chamber music work to leave a lasting impression.
