French ethnomusicologist and multi-instrumentalist Dominique JOUVE, who has dedicated half a century to the study of traditional Breton music and the Breton traditional clarinet ("treujenn-gaol"), has created a solo album centered around the traditional violin. The release weaves together the musical heritage of Upper Brittany, Auvergne, and the Kreiz-Breizh region. The album is rooted in archival field recordings gathered by the artist during his encounters with rural tradition-bearers, as well as his own background performing with the iconic 1970s–80s Breton ensemble Kanfarted Rostren.
The compilation features 24 tracks encompassing 43 musical themes, including rare dance tunes (scottische, mazurka-waltz, bourrée, gavotte pourlet, avant-deux), marching tunes, and ceremonial airs sung in the Gallo language and Auvergne Occitan dialect. Rather than directly replicating the style of historic fiddlers and accordionists, Dominique JOUVE delivers a deeply personal synthesis of this material. He is joined by guest musicians including accordionists Patrice Coquil, Patrick Le Poul, and Léandre Mandard, violinist Enora Coat, vocalist Véronique Bourjot, and the vocal ensemble "chanteurs gallos du Kreiz-Breizh." The release is accompanied by a 24-page illustrated booklet detailing the roots of French folk and Celtic traditional music.
