Carl Winther, Anders Malta, Erik Kimestad, Richard Andersson, Anders Mogensen - A Tribute To Jens Winther (2025) [Hi-Res]

Pianist Carl Winter is the son of trumpeter Jens Winter, who died at the age of 50 in 2011. Winter's son is successfully developing his own career, he can often be seen in projects where Anders Mogensen plays drums, which also applies to his current release, released by Anders Mogensen's record company AMM.
Carl Winter paid tribute to his father by performing 7 compositions written by Jens Winter together with trumpeters Anders Malta and Erik Kimestad, bassist Richard Andersson and the previously mentioned Mogensen on drums. The album opens with the song "Concord" from Jens Winter's 2005 album of the same name. A wonderful, "daring" composition in which trumpeters demonstrate their skills. Listening to the original again, it's amazing how great a musician Jens Winter was. His trumpet sound was of a special class. And Carl Winter brilliantly challenges him by bringing in two such talented trumpeters to collaborate. The compositions go well together, and it becomes clear that Karl Winter has a special relationship with Jens Winter's 1986 debut album, from which three compositions were selected. "Tribute to Brazil" is one of my favorite tracks here, probably because I often heard it on the "Copenhagen—Rio Non Stop" compilation album that Master Fatman and DJ Wunderbaum made 25 years ago. Here, Carl Winter uses the fact that they are both trumpeters and organically fits the instruments into the sound space.
For Carl Winter, creating an album in memory of his father, who passed away too soon, must be heartbreaking. He completely succeeded, and Carl Winter remains faithful to his style of playing jazz, where spontaneous moments that arise in music play a primary role. An excellent and recommended release.
