The Violin Sonata in A major was published posthumously in 1851, but was composed in 1817 and most likely performed at the “Schubertiade”—the cheerful evenings filled with music and entertainment that Schubert spent with his friends. The characteristic lyricism and rich harmonic palette reflect Schubert’s growing technical confidence in this genre. Nine years later, Schubert returned to the combination of violin and piano and composed two works in a brilliant and virtuosic style: the Rondo in B minor and the Fantasy in C minor. Alfred Einstein described these works as a substitute for “the violin concerto that Schubert never wrote.”
