In the summer of 1967, Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet recorded the title track for the album Nefertiti, creating a major shift in jazz arranging and improvisation. Written by saxophonist Wayne Shorter, the 16-bar theme was repeated continuously by the horn section without conventional solos over the harmony.
