In May 1988, American musician Bob Dylan released his twenty-fifth studio album, Down in the Groove, on Columbia Records. Created during a period of severe creative block, the record was compiled over a five-year span (1983–1987) from numerous fragmented studio sessions. To make up for a shortage of original songwriting, Bob Dylan relied heavily on cover versions of traditional folk, blues, and rock and roll songs, while also collaborating with lyricist Robert Hunter of Grateful Dead.
An eclectic and star-studded lineup joined the recordings, including guitarists Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Ronnie Wood, punk rock icons Steve Jones of Sex Pistols and Paul Simonon of The Clash, the Brooklyn hip-hop group Full Force, and the reggae rhythm section Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.
Despite the impressive roster of guest artists, the album flopped commercially and received scathing reviews from critics, who cited its disjointed nature, lack of direction, and sloppy one-take production style. However, the release and its subsequent low-key garage rock tour unexpectedly served as the launching pad for Bob Dylan's legendary "Never Ending Tour", fundamentally reshaping his live performance philosophy for decades to come.
