Formed in San Juan in 1979 by a group of Puerto Rican teenagers, The MD's (Los Medicos) emerged as pioneers of new wave and punk across the entire Caribbean region. Inspired by bands like Devo, The Police, and The Specials via a schoolteacher who had experienced the New York underground scene, the band forged a distinct identity complete with a signature look wearing surgical scrubs. Their sole album Brain Damage, recorded in just three days in 1980 and released via their own Surgeon Records, blended raw punk drive, proto-hardcore, effervescent Minimoog synthesizer lines, and catchy pop hooks. Navigating a hostile climate dominated by salsa and disco, the record earned significant radio support and became a cornerstone of the island's underground rock history before the band members disbanded in 1983 to pursue university studies.
