El Poder is the latest release from Portland-based cumbia collective Orquestra Pacífico Tropical, born from a creative retreat on the overcast Oregon coast where traditional cumbia intersects with Pacific Northwest psychedelia. Retaining the raw atmosphere of sessions recorded in a cabin living room, the 11-piece ensemble crafts a unique soundscape that embraces both celebratory spirit and shadowy undertones. Dry percussion contrasts with horns and guitars that color the repetitive grooves with humid, psychedelic tones. While the melodies remain bright, a sense of shadow lingers in the background, creating a dual nature throughout the album where cheerfulness and quiet tension coexist.
