While many young country artists look to the stripped-down, hangdog sound of recent stars like Zach Bryan for inspiration, Solon Holt takes an opposite approach. The Texas-born singer-songwriter is almost maximalist by comparison, crafting lush, often complex songs that draw not just from country, but from jazz, pop, gospel and beyond—but pack no less of an emotional punch. That made Holt a fitting collaborator for fellow genre-agnostic artist Anderson East, who produced this full-length debut album.
Holt indulges his twangier side on tracks like “Sad Country Songs” and “Good Does It Do”, while songs like “Only the Lonely” and “In My Head”, with their easy melodies and jazz-lite chords, sound like direct descendants of Room for Squares-era John Mayer. Holt sounds his most natural when he leans into his more soulful influences, like on the groovy, Hammond-heavy “Somebody” and the bluesy ballad “Till You Don’t”.
