"Barren Dream" (1987) is the debut full-length album by the Japanese progressive rock band Mr. Sirius, formed by multi-instrumentalist, flautist, and composer Kazuhiro Miyatake. The album is considered one of the most vibrant and sophisticated works to emerge from the Japanese art rock scene of the 1980s.
The album's sound combines the traditions of classic European symphonic rock (Camel, Genesis, Steve Hackett) with elegant Japanese melodicism. The arrangements are dominated by virtuosic flute parts, complex keyboard polyphony, acoustic guitar passages, and expressive electric guitar solos.
The album's highlight, in addition to Miyatake's mastery, is the clear and powerful vocals of singer Hiromi Shibuya. The contrast between melancholic acoustic ballads and complex, dynamic instrumental suites creates a rich and dreamlike atmosphere.
