In a remote desert town of a few thousand residents that draws artists and musicians living slightly outside the mainstream, guitarist and producer Tomer Ben, after relocating from city life, began gathering musicians for open-ended sessions with no fixed plan. That's how Taftir came together, growing from a trio into a five-piece: Tomer Ben (guitar, production), Mor Stanislav Porat (bass), Gal Costa (synthesizers), Gilad Sirota (drums) and Roni Goldstein (percussion) — all coming from louder, more structured bands, but choosing looseness and collectivity over precision here.
Their debut EP Od Layla Ba Ayara, released on Batov Records, comprises four mostly-live-recorded tracks. "Ayara," the opening single recorded in a single take, sets the tone for the record: raw, groove-led, modal, with an analogue feel. "Ahhh… Raj!" moves from a slow, synth-led opening with Hendrix-tinged guitar into a heavier, more fluid second half, with rising, wailing backing vocals. "Tavasim" is the most inward-facing and atmospheric piece, leaning toward instrumental soul in the vein of the Stax era, with folk-blues guitar; it's rarely performed live. "Yaris," the focus track, opens with Hacienda-esque synth chords, shifts into a groove touched by dembow, Eastern scales and maqam phrasing, constantly moving between full-time and half-time.
Ben, who had spent years as an accompanist in more structured projects, conceived Taftir as an escape from predictability — a bet on interaction between musicians rather than a predetermined outcome. The resulting EP is raw and sometimes unpolished, but a living document of a band finding its own musical language in the act of playing, responding to each other and to the atmosphere of the isolated place where it all began.
