Brazilian singer-songwriter Lucas Bezerra releases his new album EU MANDEI MEU AMOR PRO ESPAÇO in August, dedicated entirely to the work of Carlos Antônio Bezerra da Silva, known as Totonho, a songwriter from Paraíba active since the 1980s. The record is produced by Arthus Fochi, with artistic direction by Laurita Dias, and released on Cantores del Mundo, the label founded by Tita Parra, granddaughter of Chilean artist Violeta Parra.
Totonho hails from the Cariri region of Paraíba, while Lucas was born in the Cariri region of the neighboring state of Ceará; both artists, in different eras, moved through Paraíba's capital, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, and Lucas first encountered Totonho's work as a young man living in Paraíba. Conceived between 2021 and 2022 and recorded between 2023 and 2026 across Rio de Janeiro, Maceió, Recife, João Pessoa, Copenhagen, and Malmö, the album gathers nine of Totonho's songs in free, sometimes unexpected arrangements built around close attention to the lyrics, with room for silence and tension alike.
The record is conceived as a meeting point across generations shaped by Totonho's influence: it features Geraldo Azevedo, tied to Totonho by friendship and musical partnership since the 1990s; Rita Benneditto, a longtime creative partner of Totonho who followed a similar path from the state of Maranhão; and Zé Ibarra, who as a child in 2005 played zabumba on Totonho's album Sabotador de Satélite and now returns as an established name of his generation. They're joined by a group of young Paraíba singer-songwriters — Chico Limeira, Elon, Nathalia Bellar, Nina Ferreira, and Titá Moura — with backing vocals on two tracks from Juliana Linhares and Ítallo França.
The album's most intimate moment comes on its final track, which features Totonho's own voice — a fragment from a WhatsApp voice message he sent to Lucas one pandemic-era São João night, spontaneously singing a passage from Luiz Gonzaga and Luiz Ramalho's song "Roendo Unha" — a moment that steps outside conventional studio logic and lands as a personal, almost documentary gesture.
