Johari Salleh is a trumpeter, composer and arranger whose name stayed largely in the shadows despite shaping the sound of Malaysian popular music through the second half of the 20th century. Working across radio, television, film and live performance, he wrote dozens of songs that became part of the national musical fabric. But jazz was always Salleh's true personal passion — a pursuit he channeled into solo records pressed in tiny local runs during the 1970s, virtually unknown outside Malaysia. Audible Beauty Records, a new sister label to Habibi Funk, discovered this music while DJing through Malaysia and Indonesia and set out to bring it back into circulation, compiling nine tracks into a single album. The record reveals Salleh not only as a gifted songwriter but as an outstanding trumpet soloist: slow, meditative, modal grooves sit alongside more driving jazz-funk passages, with spiritual undertones and Malaysian folkloric themes running through the whole set. For listeners familiar with Salah Ragab, Ahmed Malek, Mulatu Astatke or Dollar Brand, this music will feel like a natural continuation of that same lineage — regional interpretations of jazz rooted in local context. The release is fully licensed directly from Johari Salleh himself and comes in a gatefold jacket with a 12-page booklet featuring extensive notes and previously unpublished archival photographs documenting his career.
