On Valentine's Day in Portland, saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi (of duo Oort Smog, known for albums Hidemi and Evergreen) and audiovisual artist Randall Taylor, who records as Amulets (albums Not Around But Through, Blooming), met after a sparsely attended show at the tail end of a long tour. They hit it off instantly, and as Shiroishi was loading gear afterward, Taylor impulsively proposed making a record together — an offer tossed off almost casually but accepted on the spot.
That encounter became Kimyō, recorded in winter and spring of 2024 under the joint name Bon Odori. The material came together quickly and almost entirely at a distance, with the two trading sounds and sketches back and forth, often finishing ideas the same day, trusting instinct over deliberation. Most of the album was written before additional collaborators — Pauline Lay, Dylan Fujioka, Courtney Swain, and otay:onii — joined in, their voices and textures later deepening an emotional arc that was already in place.
Musically, the record is built on a constant sense of physical tension and restlessness: "As I Imagine Them" pairs heavy chord shifts with a brooding Shiroishi alto solo, "Creatures of Habit" rides an uneven pulse that fractures midway into noise and hardcore aggression, and other tracks move from hushed noise washes into saturated waves of distorted guitar beneath vocals sliding between baritone and falsetto. The closing track, "The Weight We Carry," pulls all these threads — rhythm, noise, memory — into one dense climax featuring vocalist otay:onii.
The project was conceived from the start as a deliberately Asian collaboration: Taylor named it after a Japanese communal dance honoring ancestors, framing it as a celebration of shared heritage, while Shiroishi noted that every guest musician, along with the mixing engineer and the label, is of Asian descent. The result, Kimyō, plays as a brief but forceful collective statement — intense, unified, and quietly overwhelming.
